An Afternoon at the Orphanage!

After the VBS was finished we headed straight over to the orphanage. On our way we stopped to get fresh mangos to hand out to each of the kids. The Haitian orphanages aren’t exactly like the ones back home;  the kids wear whatever is available whether it’s too small or large, it doesn’t matter. There are about 3 kids per bed and some mattresses are on the floor. As we walked in, the kids started to gather and say “bonswa”. Some of us sat down and showed them photos while others played soccer. Jeremy became a personal jungle gym for one of the young boys! Before the kids went up to eat dinner they sang us a few songs in creole. After they finished their dinner they came back down to hang out and play. We learned some hand clapping games! The games could involve up to 4 people and got complicated.  Soon before we left we handed out the mangos, one little boy started peeling the mango with his teeth and ate the mango right then and there! We headed back to have dinner, which consisted of a steak stew, fried steak, green bean and pea casserole, beets, and fried plantains. Shortly after dinner the sky started to get darker and the wind picked up. All of a sudden the rain started to pour! It stopped after a little but since the rooves are flat they take a while for the water to drain off.  All in all, it was an eye opening day and look forward to hearing from you!

  1. Hi Emily and the team, It sounds like things are going well for you in Haiti. We love hearing what you do there each day. Think about and pray for you all daily. The food sounds good to me but not to Rob so much. Dad has an infection in his foot so I had to take him to the Quick care and he has to take a few days off, he is on a antibiotic. Everything else is going pretty good here at home. We miss you, so glad you can have this experience with the team! I am sure you are all making a great and lasting impression on those precious kids in Haiti:) Love you Em, Sleep tight!

  2. Beets, Alicia? That in and of itself would be stretching for you! Dad was interviewed on the local news about the break-in so he is famous to the 6 people who watch Channel 11 news :) They filmed part of it in the Studio so a shout out for your area of ministry! Seriously, though, we are praying for each of you as you adjust to whatever God brings your way throughout this week. We love and miss you!
